Studio
ground looper is built by Bret Perry — product, design, and engineering, from the first sketch to the App Store. Web, iPhone, and Apple Watch in eight weeks.
- 0.1 to 0.7 in eight weeks. July 17 to September 14, 2026 — every release is on the releases page.
- Three platforms shipped. Web, a native iPhone app, and a native Apple Watch app on one account.
- Eleven required checks. Nothing reaches production without typecheck, lint, unit, end-to-end, contract, and Swift tests passing — and not even the owner can skip them.
Product design
I design whole products — what they do, what they leave out, and how every screen looks and feels. The goal is a product that feels inevitable: once you've used it, you can't picture it working any other way.
- Finding the idea. I work out which features a product needs by finding the one idea it's built around and following it all the way through. Here, that idea was tracking both action and restraint.
- Zeroing in. Clutter is every decision nobody made. I find what actually matters to the people using it and cut until that's all that's left — so the product feels obvious, not busy.
- Interfaces people want to touch. One visual language across web, iPhone, and Apple Watch, in eight themes from salt pastel to ink — matched color for color, so moving from your desk to your wrist feels like one product, not three.
- Built into your day, not just your apps. Home-screen widgets, watch complications, Shortcuts, notifications you can act on, and Apple Health. A good product meets you where you already are.
- Your platform next. Bring an idea, or a product that's grown into a pile of features. I'll find what it's really for, design it end to end, and ship it.
Native Apple
Real SwiftUI apps for iPhone and Apple Watch, not a web page in a wrapper.
- Apple Health integration: steps, sleep, resting heart rate, and active energy, read-only and opt-in.
- Loops that close themselves on iPhone — a step goal, or leaving home — opt-in, with every automatic close labeled and undoable, and manual control always winning.
- A durable outbox so check-ins survive a dropped connection, per-device sign-in, and themes that match the web app color for color.
Data
Insights are a correlation engine written as plain, tested domain code.
- Relates loops to mood and energy from your own history, and says nothing until there is enough data to mean something.
- Signals, not sermons: it reports what moved together and leaves the conclusion to you.
- Missing readings stay gaps, never zeros — the charts do not invent data.
Architecture
One core serves every client.
- Next.js, React, and TypeScript on the web; SwiftUI on iOS and watchOS; one GraphQL API with persisted operations as the contract between them.
- Ports and adapters: use-cases never touch the database directly, so storage, auth, and crypto are swappable and testable.
- Time zones handled properly — "today" is today in your zone, on every device.
- A built-in site editor: this page's copy is published from an admin panel, with the checked-in version as a floor the site can always fall back to.
Security and operations
Privacy is a design constraint, not a settings page.
- Health data stays on the phone unless you separately choose to sync summaries.
- Changing your password signs out every phone and watch, not only the current browser.
- Infrastructure as code on AWS; production changes only through a pull request with every check green.
- Next: end-to-end encryption in 0.9, and the Vault in 1.0.
How I work
- Every feature starts as a phased plan: what lands, in what order, and what it depends on — written so a person or an agent can pick up any phase cold.
- Agents work from custom
.mdcrules. - Small, reversible steps. Feature branches into dev, dev into production, and releases that say what changed.
- Deferred work is written down with its reasoning, so "later" is a decision, not a leak.
Roadmap
- 0.7 — now. Web, desktop (Mac, Windows, and Linux), iPhone, Apple Watch, insights, and Apple Health.
- 0.9. Android. End-to-end encryption.
- 1.0. The Vault.
- After 1.0. The Season plan, when billing is ready.
